Amity Pierce Buxton, Ph.D
Amity moved from El Cerrito to Oakland 4 years ago and joined St. Leo’s Parish, while staying connected to St. John the Baptist Church through its Pastoral Council. Author of The Other Side of the Closet: The Coming-Out Crisis for Straight Spouses and Families, she founded the Straight Spouse Network, an organization that supports and provides information for straight spouses, current or former, of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender partners
and mixed-orientation or trans/nontrans couples. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Straight Spouse Network and the Catholic Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry; the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Bisexuality and the Journal of GLBT Family Studies; and the Emeritus Board of the Family Equality Council. Member of the American Psychological Association and the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, she does informal
counseling, leads an Oakland support group, lectures, gives workshops, and publishes articles on issues of spouses in mixedorientation or trans/nontrans couples. She welcomes the opportunity to contribute to St. Leo’s unique community as a Parish Council member.
